Food Allergy Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear immediately, but can appear up to two hours after a person has eaten the food to which he or she is allergic. The person may experience one or several of the symptoms below.

  • Hives
  • (the most common symptom of food allergy.)
  • Tingling sensation in the mouth
  • Swelling of the tongue and throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, or bloating.
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Light-headedness, loss of consciousness, and death.

In addition to the above symptoms, Eczema (a flaky red skin condition), as well as Asthma (causing wheezing and coughing) can be triggered by a food allergy. Rhinitis (Itchy, runny nose with sneezing) may also occur.
