Mold in my home, don't want to move

February 19, 2002

Dear Allergy Nurse
Dear Allergy Nurse
I live in a very old Victorian apartment in San Francisco where mold grows very easily. I have been symptomatic with fatigue, headaches, some sinus problems, dull intermittent nausea, some hair loss, malaise, muscle ache and insomnia with heart palpitations when I lie down to sleep. MD has tested me to no avail and allergist has tested me for many molds, of which I test very reactive. I would prefer not to move, however, I can not get well. Do you think it would be helpful to first try the Whispure, a dehumidifier or Hygenaire System before I go ahead and move or is it wiser to just change my environment altogether right away? Is it possible that my furniture is permanently contaminated? -- R.D., California

First, you need to find a professional Internal Air Specialist or Building Inspector, or Mold Remediation Specialist to make an assessment of the extent of mold damage in your home. Look in the yellow pages under some of the words or phrases above to find local help.

Some molds do prefer textiles. Likely you would see mold growth or stains on the outside of your furniture if it has mold damage. However, if liquids have been spilled on the furniture so that the padding inside has remained damp, it may be possible for the mold to be hidden. A professional should be able to examine your furniture and make recommendations.

The Whispure dehumidifier and Hygenaire System are a wonderful combination help eliminate future mold growth. The two products work together to greatly reduce the number of mold spores in your home. However, you still need to clean up any existing mold.

You should also check for any leaky pipes or other sources of moisture. A professional inspector can help with this also.

If the mold is making you ill, do not attempt the mold clean-up process yourself. Mold concentration levels are much higher when a mold clean-up is in process. Most professionals use equipment to exhaust the spores outside during cleanup, and to block all rooms except the one they are working on. However, you should ask the mold professional if it is safe from you to be in the home when the mold remediation is in progress.

If you are sick and you believe mold is causing your problem, and you are unable to eliminate the mold and/or moisture problems quickly, then your best course is to move. But if you want to stay in your home, and are able to get help to remedy the mold problem, the Whispure dehumidifier and Hygenaire System would be great choices to help keep the mold from returning.

The Whispure dehumidifier and Hygenaire System, as well as other products to help with mold clean-up and control, can be found here.
