Mold in the toilet bowlOctober 17, 2002
If you've ever vacated your home for a few weeks you probably returned to find mold growing in the toilet bowl. Stagnant water is an ideal environment for mold growth. But if toilets are being flushed several times a day, the water is not stagnant. The degree of mold growth you describe three days after scrubbing certainly indicates an abnormal situation. Be sure you are scrubbing your toilet bowl with bleach, and allow it to remain in the bowl for as long as possible before and after scrubbing. An odorless alternative to bleach is a product called NAS-12. You may also want to check a mold spore level in your home. This can be done easily with the Mold Test Kit available from National Allergy Supply. You can find the Mold Test Kit, as well as NAS-12, at the link at the end of this article. You may also be interested in some new products that were introduced earlier this year. Sondra Cooley, Training and Education Manager for National Allergy Supply, shared this information about them: We introduced the Hygenaire air purifier and 'The Solution' spray cleaner last spring. We recommend both to asthma and allergy patients to clean their environment of biological and chemical pollutants. The Hygenaire is simple in design and works beautifully. I have two cabinets in my upstairs laundry area and in my master bath . Hygenaire is an inexpensive alternative to costly remediation, remodeling or moving. Let me explain! The Hygenaire system is a compact, battery operated, cabinet that can be placed anywhere and operates 24/7. The unique botanical formula( grapefruit seed extract) is non-toxic and safe for humans, animals, plants and furnishings. A small fan in the cabinet (one D-cell battery) distributes the extract in the air, thus cleaning the air 24/7. It exchanges the extract with the water vapor in a room's ambient air. Indoor air currents carry the extract solution through-out the room, where it gets to the source of allergens and other contaminants. If you were to throw out a grapefruit on the ground, every part of the fruit will grow mold, except the seed. There is no smell and no odor with this system. The second product is called "The Solution" by Hygenaire and is a spray cleaner. It's protective cleaning and purifying solution deodorizes and freshens while it cleans. We recommend you spray the vent kit filter once a day to clean the incoming air in a room of mold spores. These products are a part of a treatment protocol by Dr. Donald Dennis. We recommend them for everyone with mold problems and sensitivities. You'll find the Mold Test Kit, Hygenaire system, NAS-12, and other items to help with mold control here. Lois' note: Sondra tells me their customers have had excellent results in eliminating mold problems with the Hygenaire system and "The Solution." If you continue to experience mold problems after using these measures, you may need to consult an Indoor Air Specialist.
