Dust mites and upholstery -- leather or fabric?

September 2, 2001, updated November 22, 2003

Dear Allergy Nurse
Dear Allergy Nurse
Our old couch is a haven for dust mites. We are going to by a new couch and have been advised that it should be upholstered with smooth leather. However, we would prefer something softer. Are there soft and comfortable man-made materials which resist dust mite? -- DJL

I asked Steve Hill with National Allergy Supply, an affiliate sponsor of AllergyNursing.com, what is currently available.

Steve writes:
Although there are man-made dust mite-proof fabrics available, I don't know of any that are being used in manufacturing furniture.

If you prefer fabric, you will have to treat the furniture. Start with frequent vacuuming to remove the surface mites and their allergens. Either have a non-allergic family member do the task or wear a mask.

Use a high efficiency vacuum bag that retains allergens rather than blowing them back into the air. Lowering the relative humidity level in your home to below 50% will help control the mite populations.

Chemical treatments either kill the mites or neutralize the offending allergens. Name brands include DUSTMITE AND FLEA CONTROL, Acarosan, Allersearch ADS, X-Mite, and AllerSafe Dustroy. Be sure to read the label before using these products. They moisten the material treated so do not use them if your upholstery is water-sensitive.
