Can fevers be associated with allergies? -- Jennie, Indiana

The term hay fever is commonly used to refer to seasonal allergies, so people sometimes think allergies cause fever. But hay fever is not really a fever. Fever usually indicates a bacterial or viral infection.

Fever is nature's way of fighting the invading bacteria or virus. There are some fevers that can be self-treated, and others that require emergency medical help. In the references for this item, I've linked to a handy fever flowchart to help you determine how to treat a fever.
