MGUS, mold, and fungus on body organsMarch 6, 2003
Your question caught my attention because I was also diagnosed with MGUS in the summer of 2002. MGUS is a blood disorder that, in some cases, can lead to Multiple Myeloma, an incurable form of cancer. I strongly urge you to continue under your physician's care and not depend on "treating MGUS by diet alone." I continue to keep regular visits with my oncologist who is monitoring my MGUS. I am not aware of any medical research that links mold or fungus with MGUS. Mold or fungus can affect the entire body. It can affect internal organs and invade the blood stream. A systemic fungal infection is very serious and can be fatal. Usually these severe fungal infections only occur in those whose resistance is extremely lowered by other serious disease or predisposing conditions. Systemic fungal infections include Aspergillosis, Blastomycosis, Candidasis, Coccidioidomycosis, Cryptococcosis, and Histoplasmosis. I have prepared a supplemental item in which I've shared more about these serious fungal infections. This item can be found here. Those with serious internal fungal infections are usually under the care of an Infectious Disease Specialist. If you suspect you have fungal infection in your body, you should see a physician. Some very promising research indicates that serotonin, which is naturally produced in our bodies and enables transmission between nerve endings, may also fight fungal infections. Serotonin affects our moods, emotions, sleep, and appetite. Studies reported in the February, 2003, issue of Journal of Medical Microbiology "clearly demonstrate antifungal effects of [serotonin]." You mentioned that you are treating your MGUS by following an antifungal diet. I appreciate your desire to heal your body naturally. I am a firm believer that God has provided all we need for healthy bodies. An example of this is the serotonin He wove into our system. Without this simple little ingredient, our bodies would be unable to function. Another example is the nutrious value of the food he created in it's natural state. We can do a lot to make our bodies healthier by proper nutrition, exercise, and even our attitudes. However, our bodies and our environment no longer function perfectly as they did when they were first created. For example, our serotonin levels can be low, or we may be sick in spite of proper nutrition and exercise. Because of this, we still need medical intervention sometimes. Rex Russell, M.D., has done extensive research in this area, and has written a book about healing through proper nutrition. Dr. Russell says says: "I'm healthier because I try to follow God's principles for healthy living, but I will still face disease. I still have insulin-dependent diabetes. The complications of my disease, however, have been reversed and/or delayed. I am a healthy person." You can read more more about Dr. Russell's book here.
