Allergy to a favorite pet

September 28, 2001

Dear Allergy Nurse

Can you be allergic to pet dander even if it's a very small dog? I have had her for 15 years, but nothing the doctors have tried can stop my runny nose. My doc says get rid of it. -- Dee, Tennessee

There's a saying among allergists that you should never tell a patient to get rid of his pet or he will get rid of his allergist!

Hopefully, your physician has confirmed by testing that you are allergic to dogs. In addition, most allergists will obtain a careful medical history and physical exam to determine other possible causes, and test for other allergens if indicated.

The size of the pet or length of hair is not a factor in allergic reactions. Dander is no respecter of pets, it "rains upon the just and the unjust" animal!

However, there are some things that will help:

Your allergist will likely recommend allergy shots when the above measures fail to provide satisfactory results.
