A moldy story'Your Allergy Nurse' shares her own moldy storyReturn air grille - simple solutionThe exhaust fan doesn't pull all the moisture from the bathroom when the shower is running. Moisture collects on mirrors as well as rising toward the ceiling. As a result, mold grows on the ceiling. I've asked an electrician to help me select a more effecient exhaust fan and to be sure it is vented properly. The electrician suggested that, in addition to the exhaust fan, I install a return air grille above the bathroom door. Since steam rises, the high vent will allow humidity levels to equalize between rooms even with the door closed. My dehumidifier keeps humidity levels low in the rest of the house, and this will allow the dehumidifier to work on the bathroom moisture even with the door closed. The electrician pointed out that the return air grille will also help the exhaust fan to work more efficiently by providing air flow to the fan. It will decrease humidity in the bathroom as the exhaust fan pulls in air from rooms where the humidity is low. What a simple solution! One that makes me say, "Wow! Why didn't I think of that?" This idea will work best if you have a good dehumidifier. Mine is a Whirlpool 40 pint dehumidifier and I've been very pleased with it. You can read more about it here. |
