Antidepressants

Preparing for allergy testing

Note: A local pharmacist worked with me to research antidepressants that are likely to interfere with allergy testing. We use the list below in our office, but you will need to consult your physician for his or her specific recommendations prior to allergy testing.

The following antidepressants may sometimes affect test results Talk with your allergist or his nurse about their recommendations regarding your antidepressant. Never stop your antidepressant without asking the physician who prescribed it if you can safely leave it off for a couple days.

Elavil (amitriptyline)
Asendin (amoxapine)
Anafranil (clomipramine)
Norpramin (desipramine)
Sinequan (doxepin)
Tofranil (Imipramine)
Pamelor (nortriptyline)
Vivactil (protriptyline)
Surmontil (trimipramine)
Maprotiline
Remeron (mirtazapine)

The following antidepressants have little or no affect on testing and you may be able to continue taking them up until the time you are tested:
Desyrel (trazadone)
Wellbutrin (bupropion)
Effexor (venlafaxine)
Serzone (nefazodone)
Celexa
Prozac (fluoxetine)
Luvox (fluvoxamine)
Paxil (paroxetine)
Zoloft (sertraline)
Nardil* (phenelzine)
Parnate* (tranylcypromine)

*Monoaminoxidase (MAO) inhibitors such as Nardil and Parnate can make it harder to reverse a systemic reaction to allergy testing or shots. Be sure to talk with your physician about the safety of allergy testing if you are taking one of these medications.
