ALLERGY BRIEFS

Rice a non-allergic food?

July 3, 2003

Dear Allergy Nurse
Dear Allergy Nurse
Did you know that rice is the one food that no one in the world is allergic to? -- A.B., Arkansas

Rice is sometimes promoted as a non-allergic food. It is often used in allergy-free diets. It is generally considered to be safe for those suffering from multiple food allergies. But not always so!

Especially in the eastern countries where rice is a staple food, allergy to rice is common. Rice allergy is much lower in the U.S, but some in the U.S. and other western or European countries have been found to be allergic to rice.
