Allegic to penicillin, exposed to penicillium

Dear Allergy Nurse
I am allergic to penicillin, and recently was exposed to some form of penicillium mold ( I believe ). How long can I expect the effects of that exposure to last, assuming I'm not still being exposed to it? I'm currently taking medications to relieve the hives. -- Frank, U.S.A.

We've seen no relationship in our office between allergy to the antibiotic penicillin, and allergy to the mold penicillium, from which penicillin is derived.

There is a possibility that you could be allergic to both. However, reading your letter in context, it looks like you may suspicion that exposure to penicillium mold caused your hives since you are allergic to penicillin.

Sometimes it is extremely difficult to pinpoint what is causing hives. Hives are often persistent. They may come and go at intervals for days or weeks after exposure to an allergen. I've shared more about this perplexing problem at the links below:
