ALLERGY BRIEFS
Shots for medication or food allergiesApril 30, 2003
The allergists I've worked with and educational seminars I've attended have indicated that allergy shots for either medications or foods would be extremely dangerous. When inhalent allergens such as dust, cat, mold, and pollen are injected into the body, they tend to build antibodies toward the offending allergen with limited risk of severe reactions. Even with these shots, however, there is some risk. This is why most allergists insist that their patients remain in the office for 20 minutes or more after the injection. The risk of shots is much greater with foods and medications. However, some allergists do provide desensitation to certain medications. This must be performed under the direction of an allergy/immunology specialist knowledgeable about the procedure, and only at a medical facility equipped to handle reactions. Click here for more. You may want to ask the physician who treats your osteoarthritis to help you find an allergist who can offer desensitation. |
